Fun with Fourth of July Fashions

Oh, hey there, happy summertime! Picnics and pool parties and Fourth of July fireworks! I have so much fun decorating for this holiday, and always go a little overboard festooning the front porch in red, white, and blue everything! I love Independence Day celebrations because it’s like we have a little extra permission to get as fun and funky as we want with our patriotic fashions. I’m going to show you a few outfits that will have you looking and feeling like a firecracker, no matter the occasion-from cookouts to pool parties to fireworks! Because like Katy Perry says, ” Baby You’re a Firework!” Hooray for the red, white and blue!

A few tips for styling your patriotic fashions.

  • Have fun! – Try throwing on a patriotic inspired kimono, or even a red, white and blue floral kimono just for the fun of it. I’m thinking it should be against the laws of fashion to take this too seriously.
  • Try unconventional patriotic colors – think shades of burgundy, cream and even turquoise or light blue if you’re more comfortable with them.
  • Mix it up! – go ahead and play with patterns like florals, polka dots and stars and stripes. It’s okay to mix those up as long as everything is in the same family.
  • Add accessories! – Red, white, and blue jewelry and accessories are everywhere this time of year. Add a showstopping piece to any outfit and you’re good to go.

Look 1- Style a Simple Dress with a Statement Necklace

Blue Old Navy Swing Dress
Swing dresses are GREAT for pear shapes!

I love these little Old Navy dresses for their simplicity and fit. This navy blue one in an a-line silhouette is so fun and swingy. I styled it here with a red, white and blue statement necklace I’ve had for years, and the MIA bandana sandals I got from Stitch Fix, using their new “Shop Your Looks” feature. I’ve actually worn them this summer more than I thought I would. They’re just so dang cute! Bandana print is quintessentially Americana and will carry you all summer long. I also styled them with the summery striped tee shirt dress below. I’ve been amazed at how much they go back with. See below for a few similar styles.

Look 2 – Style a Graphic Tee with a Patriotic Kimono

Oh my Stars Tee with Kimono

It’s not a secret that one of my tried and true outfit staples is a graphic tee and kimono. The style just works for me and my funky old pear shape. I found this lightweight patriotic print kimono online at Tee for the Soul and paired it with the Ruby’s Rubbish “Oh My Stars” graphic tee I’ve had for a couple of years. I just threw on some shorts – you could do denim shorts or even jeans with this look. The crystal flip flops were a gift from a friend, and I think about her every Fourth of July when I wear them. I’ve linked a few similar tees and kimonos for you below.

Look 3 – Style Lightweight Linen Pants with a Denim Jacket

Believe it or not I found these trendy striped cropped linen pants at Sam’s Club. Yep! Sam’s Club! I’ve actually found several stylish things there over the years – swimsuits, dresses, blazers and my favorite black jeggings are from Sam’s. I’m styling them with a simple crew neck tee and white denim jacket, but you could easily make it a bit more festive by changing out the plain tee for a graphic tee. Use your imagination! I livened up the look with a pair of patriotic earrings I found at a local boutique. They’re super cute and lightweight and add the just the right ‘pop’ to the outfit. A few similar styles are linked below.

Look 4 – Striped Tee Shirt Dress

Striped Tee shirt dress with bandana sandals

I recently styled this adorable little striped tee shirt dress one weekend for a road trip the hubs and I took. It’s my favorite a-line style and in a soft terry knit. It was the only item I kept from my latest Stitch Fix (no reveal), but I’m in love with it. I’m styling it here with those comfy bandana print sandals, I mentioned above. Try a striped tee dress like this with a denim jacket and sneakers, or even platform sandals. This is such a versatile piece to have in your wardrobe, and will work perfectly for your Independence Day festivities. I’ve linked some shopping suggestions for you.

Look 5 – Sparkly Top and Jeans

Chico's red and white striped sequin top

I found this shiny Chico’s top on Thred Up and used credit from items I consigned to purchase it. My local consignment store recently closed, so I’ve been using ThredUp exclusively for a while to clean out my closet, and to also find great deals on gently used clothes, like this sequin top. I paired the top with my Denizen jeans from Target and my favorite white Converse Shoreline Sneakers. I added the beaded earrings I got from Stitch Fix several years ago just for the fun of it. Boom! I’m a firework!

I hope you enjoyed these patriotic stylish suggestions. Remember to have fun while you celebrate in style! I’m so thankful to and proud to be an American and look forward to celebrating the holiday with my kids and grandkids. I’m sure there are fireworks in my future! I hope you have a very happy Independence Day, and God Bless the USA!
